ATOM’s own Meredith James, a Clinical Specialist Neuromuscular Physiotherapist and Principal Investigator at the John Walton Muscular Dystrophy Research Centre (JWMDRC), was named 2023 Early Career Scientist of the Year.
James was recognized for her impactful work to assist those living with dysferlinopathy, which is a specific type of muscular dystrophy.
The award is one of six President’s Awards presented annually by Muscular Dystrophy UK, the leading charity for over 110,000 children and adults living with one of over 60 muscle wasting and weakening conditions in the UK.
James said after receiving the honor:
“This is not just my award. This has been the work of many physiotherapists internationally who have been working in limb girdle muscular dystrophy and assisted me within my own PhD studies to make an outcome measure that we have now the first outcome measure for limb girdle muscular dystrophy”
Working in Newcastle at the JWMDRC, James’ primary focus is on clinical and research activity for children and adults with neuromuscular disorders.
